From the Record Group:

This collection contains the papers of the early Presidents of Washington College. Beginning with Washington College’s first President William Smith through it’s fourteenth Dr. Charles W. Reid. Francis Waters served two times as President making him the fifth and nineth President. Due to the fires of 1827 and 1916 many of the early records were lost including the identity of the Presidents from 1805-1813. These papers consist of original materials, research from primary and secondary sources, facsimile copies, and published materials.

Biographical Information

Hugh McGuire (active 1814), very little biographical information available on Hugh McGuire aside from his professional career. He taught ancient languages at St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland in 1795. In 1807 McGuire opened an academy in Washington, D.C., for twenty-four dollars per annum he taught English grammar, reading, writing, and arithmetic, for forty dollars per annum he taught Latin, Greek, mathematics, geography, bookkeeping, etc. He then became principal of the public academy. A year later he established a school at Bladensburg, MD, unfortunately it failed due to lack of funding. In 1812 McGuire opened another school in Georgetown near Union Tavern. He then began to teach languages at Washington College and served as President from 1813-1815. By 1822 Dr. McGuire had become Principal and taught at the Classical and English Seminary in St. Paul’s Lane. McGuire edited the 1820 edition of Davidson’s Latin Grammar; revised, improved and enlarged by Davidson, James, 1732-1809.
