Scope and Content Note

This collection contains the speech “American Citizenship” given by James M. Munroe of Annapolis at the Washington’ Birthday celebration at Washington College February 22, 1911. There is also a photocopy of the speech and the letter from President James W. Cain inviting Munroe to speak. Original of the letter is located in the President’s papers. While the speech briefly talks about immigration it focuses largely on political issues of the time including prohibition and the liquor vote and universal education.

Biographical Information

James Middleton Munroe (1856-1937) was born in Annapolis, Maryland April 3rd to James Munroe, Sr. (1827-1896), Mayor of Annapolis, and Matilda Walter Munroe (1830-1893). He graduated from St. John’s College in 1875 and went on to receive a law degree from the University of Maryland. During his career as a lawyer, he served as the dean of the local bar and as state's attorney in 1883. In 1907 he received an honorary degree of law from Washington College. James married Mary Adele Chase (1860-1942) of New Orleans in 1885, together they had six children. He died January 2, 1937 due to heart complications following a bout of pneumonia.
