Biographical Information
John P. Stanley (1916-1985) was born in Woodstown, New Jersey, but lived the majority of his life in Elkton, Maryland. Stanley graduated from Washington College in 1938 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and served as a supply officer in the Army during World War II, earning a Bronze Star. An active member of his community, Stanley was elected town commissioner in 1955 and went on to serve four consecutive terms in that position. In 1963, Stanley was elected mayor of Elkton, and won re-election in 1965. Stanley married Helen Maloney (1915-1996) and had two children. Stanley died of cancer on April 12, 1985 and is buried in Elkton Cemetery in Elkton, Maryland.
