Scope and Contents Note

This collection contains several pieces of campaign ephemera including a “Vote the Blueprint for Progress Team” postcard, 1966, a “Vote Democratic” emery board, 1962, a Goldstein pin, circa 1960s, and a pin for Goldstein’s 1998 Comptroller campaign. There is also a “Students for Kennedy” pin and a McKeldin and Rollins pin for Theodore McKeldin’s Governor re-election and Edward D. E. Rollins’ run for Attorney General in 1954.

Biographical Information

Louis Lazarus Goldstein (1913-1998) was born on March 14th in Prince Frederick Maryland to Goodman Goldstein (1880-1956) and Belle Butcher Goldstein (1885-1969), Jewish immigrants from Prussia. Louis graduated from Washington College in 1935. While at Washington College he majored in Chemistry, but he had also taken classes in Government. He went on to get his Law degree from the University of Maryland in 1938. One of his Washington College classmates was the son of State Senator S. Scott Beck encouraged him to go into Politics and in 1938 he was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates for Calvert County. World War II interrupted his political career, Goldstein joined the United States Marine Corp. and served in the Pacific. He achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant and after the surrender of Japan, he was a member of Gen. MacArthur’s staff investigating Japanese war crimes in the Philippines. His political career resumed in 1946 and he served in the Maryland State Senate from 1946-1958 and then as Comptroller of Maryland from 1959 until his death in 1998. Louis married Hazel Horton (1917-1996) in 1948 and they had two daughters. Goldstein was continually involved with Washington College serving on the Board of Visitors & Governors and making a lasting impression on many of the alumni. He passed away from a heart attack on July 3, 1998. Washington College continues to honor Louis Goldstein with the Louis L. Goldstein Award and through the Goldstein Program in Public Affairs.
