Scope and Contents Note

This collection contains a scrapbook kept by F. Stanley Porter during his time at Washington College. Most of the clippings are about the Football and Baseball teams, both of which Porter was a prominent player. There are also items from other clubs and events including Mount Vernon Literary Society, dances, and award ceremonies.

Biographical Information

Frederick Stanley Porter (1890-1951) was born on April 6th in Princess Anne, Maryland to Twilley Caleb Porter and Florence Long Porter. Stanley attended Washington College on a scholarship when he was 17 and graduated in 1912. While there he was a standout on the football team and named All-Maryland. After graduation, Porter returned to coach the Washington College football and baseball teams. He then went to Washington and Lee to earn his law degree graduating in 1916. He moved to Baltimore and began working for an insurance company. He served in World War I with the 313 Infantry, Maryland National Guard, and was sent to France. Upon his return from military service, he briefly ran for public office as a Republican candidate. He continued his law career and worked for the Justice Department in their anti-trust division. In 1920 he married Agnes Christian James (1894-1977). The couple had one son, F. Stanley Porter, Jr. (1927-2006). Porter passed away in December of 1951 in Baltimore.
