This collection contains photocopies of daybooks and ledgers for the Willis Wells Funeral Home in Chestertown, Maryland. Although they are primarily financial accounts, they still contain information on the decedent.

Biographical Information

J. Willis Wells (1914-2012) was born on September 5th in Pittsville, Maryland to William Howard and Mary Farlow Wells. His grandparents ran a funeral establishment in Pittsville and when Wells graduated high school in 1932, he continued in the family tradition by attending the Eckel’s Mortuary College in Philadelphia, graduating in 1935. He then worked for Mrs. Jesse Uliston’s business in Chestertown beginning his lifetime career. Over the sixty years he worked in the funeral business he also received certification from the Wilmer Eye Institute and helped found the Kent and Queen Anne’s Rescue Squad; the funeral home had been providing ambulance services before the Squad’s formation. He was a member of numerous organizations both benevolent and professional. He married Iola Hollinger and together they had three daughters. Wells died on October 7, 2012, at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, MD.
