Scope and Contents Note

Paul Titsworth served as President of Washington College from 1923-1933. His papers deal with the endowment for Washington College, issues related to the campus and housing, curriculum, grading, and awarding of honorary degrees. There are also papers related to the Summer School for Ministers hosted at the College, the Washington Centennial, and Washington College’s sesquicentennial.

Biographical Information

Paul Emerson Titsworth (1881-1933) was born May 31 in Ashaway, Rhode Island to the Rev. Warner Gardner Titsworth and Isabelle Glaspey Titsworth. In 1883 the family moved to Alfred, New York. While attending Alfred University Paul worked part-time at a newspaper. He transferred to Ohio University for his senior year but returned to Alfred for his PH.B. in 1904. He taught Modern Languages and continued his graduate work in Chicago and Wisconsin, in 1907 he attended the University of Wisconsin and graduated with a doctorate in 1911. Titsworth taught Modern Languages at his alma mater Alfred University until 1920 when he became Dean. He resigned from the position to become the President of Washington College in 1923. He served for a decade and during his tenure he dealt with the issues of housing on campus, revisions to grading and curriculum, the beautification of the campus, and the creation of an endowment. Titsworth resigned in December of 1932, returning a final time to Alfred University this time as its President. Sadly, he passed in December of 1933 from a heart attack. Paul married Vida Stillman and together they had three daughters Elizabeth, Eleanor, and Katherine.
