Biographical Information

Frederick G. Livingood (1893-1966) was born September 19th in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to Samuel Livingood and Rebecca Schaeffer Livingood. He graduated from the State Normal School at Slipper Rock and went on to teach elementary school in Washington, PA for five years and was then promoted to principal. During World War I he served as the “Y” secretary for Camp Eustis, Virginia. After the war, he went on to earn his master’s from Harvard in 1923 followed by his doctorate in 1925. He then came to the Education department at Washington College, he was promoted to the position of Dean in June 1940. After Mead’s death in 1949, Livingood took over as acting President after informing the board he did not wish to be considered a candidate for President. He served until Daniel Gibson took up the post in 1950 and returned to his position as Dean until retiring in 1958, he still taught part-time. When his health began to fail in 1960, he fully retired. He passed away on April 25th, 1966. In 1925 he married Margaret Irene Kline and together they had two sons: Frederick, Jr., and John.
