Many of the letters discuss mutual friends and news. As the Civil War continues the letters discuss the war including soldiers in Chestertown. One letter is on Pro-Union stationary with “The Flag of a New Confederacy.” Showing Uncle Sam kicking Jeff Davis, though both Joseph and Francis seem to have supported the Confederacy.
