Scope and Contents Note

This collection contains negatives and photographs taken by Alan at various Washington College events and in his capacity as a portrait photographer. The negatives are suffering from vinegar syndrome, a type of degradation common to the plastics used at that time. The negatives have been scanned and are available in digital format.

This collection contains ninety-one negatives taken in 1926. A majority of the photographs are of Washington College including the campus, sporting events, fellow students, and events. This collection contains large and medium-format black-and-white negatives of various events. Those taken for the college include commencements and awards, John F. Kennedy’s campaign visit, and photographs of Charles Downs. Other images of events and people in Chestertown and the surrounding area were taken, most likely for the Kent News.

Robert C. Thackery letter (transcript)

Scope and Contents Note

This collection contains a transcript of a letter written by Robert C. Thackery to the editor of The Cecil Whig. It was published in the June 14, 1870 paper. The letter was written in Chestertown, while Thackery was a student at Washington College. In this letter, Thackery laments the fact that people on the Eastern Shore are not sending their children to Washington College, and implores them to do so.
