Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a notebook kept by Charles Smith started April 3, 1783 while a student at Washington College, Chestertown, MD. It is entitled “Plane Trigonometry and the application of it to the taking of Height and Distances: Also Surveying and the Division of Lands and also the Laying out of New Lands.” Included among the examples is a problem based on the Siege of York.

This collection contains an unidentified student’s notebook while they attended Washington College circa 1790. The book lists historical events starting with 4004 B.C. to 476 A.D. Many of the early historical events are taken from Biblical history. There is also a list of Roman Emperors at that end of the notebook.

There are many beautiful hand-drawn diagrams. There is faint writing on both covers one of which indicate he used it while attending Washington College, there are also various dates in different parts of the book, one cover has 1787, a flyleaf of multiple signatures has 1786, while a clear flyleaf mentions President Washington and...

Scott family papers

Scope and Contents Note

This collection contains several documents belonging to the Scott family of Chestertown, Maryland, including two 18th-century diplomas from Washington College. Also included is a document from George Washington appointing John Scott IV the customs collector for the port of Chestertown and a letter, dated November 12, 1788, by John Scott IV regarding permits and other financial matters.
