Organizational History Note

Washington College was founded in 1782 when the first president William Smith petitioned for the Kent Public School to be chartered as a college, the first chartered in the new United States of America. George Washington gave a founding gift of 50 Guineas and his name to the “College of Chester”. Washington also served on the Board of Visitors and Governors from 1782-1789. The goal of the college was to cultivate responsible citizen-leaders, today it is to allow students the chance to succeed on their own terms through purposeful choices. The college became coeducational in 1891. The college graduated its first African American student in 1962.
