Scope and Contents Note
This collection contains the papers of the early Presidents of Washington College. Beginning with Washington College’s first President William Smith through it’s fourteenth Dr. Charles W. Reid. Francis Waters served two times as President making him the fifth and nineth President. Due to the fires of 1827 and 1916 many of the early records were lost including the identity of the Presidents from 1805-1813. These papers consist of original materials, research from primary and secondary sources, facsimile copies, and published materials.

Biographical Information
Gerard E. Stack (active 1818), very little biographical information available on Gerard E. Stack aside from his professional career. He was a professor of Greek and Latin at Dickinson College in 1816, he also served as their librarian. Stack accepted the position as Principal pro tem of Washington College in 1817, he also taught languages and some mathematics. Originally the term was for six months, from October 20, 1817-April 20, 1818. Stack served passed this term until Rev. Francis Waters accepted the position of Principal.
