Scope and Contents Note
This collection contains the papers of the early Presidents of Washington College. Beginning with Washington College’s first President William Smith through it’s fourteenth Dr. Charles W. Reid. Francis Waters served two times as President making him the fifth and nineth President. Due to the fires of 1827 and 1916 many of the early records were lost including the identity of the Presidents from 1805-1813. These papers consist of original materials, research from primary and secondary sources, facsimile copies, and published materials.

Biographical Information
Andrew J. Sutton (1830-1871) was born August 5 in Baltimore, Maryland to Vincent Sutton and Mary Bean Sutton. Andrew studied at St. Mary’s Seminary receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1848 and then his master’s degree in law in 1850. He only practiced law for a short time before becoming a professor of literature and ancient and modern languages in 1856 at Washington College. He served as Vice Principal during Dr. Waters’ second term and was chosen to succeed him after his resignation. Sutton also studied theology and was ordained as a priest in the Protestant Episcopal Church in 1859. Sutton’s presidency was fraught with issues including Sutton’s health and the American Civil War. Sutton resigned from the college in 1867. Andrew married Mary Abel Crane; Mary passed away in 1865. In 1867 Sutton married again, this time to Laura Chambers. After Chestertown, Sutton moved to Philadelphia and then New York where he died in 1879. He is buried in Chestertown.
