Organizational History Note
The Mount Vernon Literary Society served as the sole society at Washington College for many years and during that time debates and conflicts occurred, most notable that between students who boarded versus those who didn’t. In 1892 the students met and elected to create the Philomathean Literary Society, it was felt there were enough students that a rivalry between the two literary societies would not occur and due to the courteous nature of both they worked well together. The Philomathean Literary Society was active until 1902 when it was succeeded by the Adelphia Literary Society.
