Scott family papers
Scope and Contents Note
This collection contains several documents belonging to the Scott family of Chestertown, Maryland, including two 18th-century diplomas from Washington College. Also included is a document from George Washington appointing John Scott IV the customs collector for the port of Chestertown and a letter, dated November 12, 1788, by John Scott IV regarding permits and other financial matters.

Biographical Information
Judge John Scott IV 1768-1813) was born on February 17 in Kent County Maryland to Dr. John Scott III (1728-1790) and Elizabeth Calder Scott (b. 1733). He was the salutatorian of the first graduating class of Washington College, earning a Bachelor's degree in 1783 and a Master's degree in 1785. In 1785, Scott was appointed Customs Collector for the port of Chestertown by George Washington and later served as an Honorary Counsellor for the Chestertown Abolition Society. He married Elizabeth Goodwin Dorsey Scott (1769-1853) in 1788 and they had four children: John Scott V (1788-1843), Lieutenant Henry Dorsey Scott (1794-1830), Judge Thomas Parksin Scott (1804-1873), and Mary "Polly" Scott (d. 1807). Scott died in July 1813 in Baltimore and is buried in Loudon Park Cemetery.
Edward Scott (1772-1842) was born on May 4, presumably in Kent County Maryland to Dr. John Scott III (1728-1790) and Elizabeth Calder Scott (b. 1733). Scott graduated from Washington College in 1788, later studying medicine in Philadelphia and under the tutelage of Chestertown doctor James M. Anderson. Edward established a medical practice in Galena, Maryland, and later joined the Chestertown Abolition Society. Scott married Anna Marie Comegys (1783-1857) and had seven children: William Comegys Scott (1800-1872), Anna M. Scott (1810-1896), Catharine A. Scott (1817-1885), Charles Gordon Scott, Jr. (1819-1882), Cornelius John Scott (1821-1899), Elizabeth Scott Pierson (d. 1899), and Peregrin Brown Scott (d. 1915). Scott died on September 30, 1842, in Galena and is buried in Olivet Cemetery.
