Biographical Information

The Stam family was a prominent family in Chestertown, Maryland throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Johannes Rudolph Stam (born circa 1761) and his wife Mary Magdalen Kuhn appear to be the first Stams to live in Chestertown. They had one child, John Louis Stam (1804-1886), the original owner of the Stam House at 114 Washington Avenue, as well as the erector of the town hall and original owner of Stam's drug store. Other family members include Colin Ferguson Stam (1846-1898), a graduate of Washington College and owner of Stam's drug store, and his son Colin Ferguson Stam Jr., (1896-1966) who was chief of staff of the joint congressional committee on internal revenue taxation.
