Organizational History

Walters Art Museum was established in 1934 when Henry Walters (1848-1931) bequeathed the collection of art amassed by him and his father, William T. Walters (1819-1894), to the City of Baltimore. Originally called the Walters Art Gallery, it is housed in two buildings in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood. In the late 1800s William T. would occasionally open his collection to the public, his son continued making their collection available to the public. The collection contains 19th-Century paintings to works form the Middle East and African. It also has an extensive collection of medieval manuscripts. The museum is free to the public.
