This collection contains an affidavit from Mary Melvin regarding a cutting her father, John Nowland, took of a fig tree from the grounds of Wakefield, George Washington’s birthplace, in the 1860s. No part of a fig tree is included.

Biographical Information

Mary E. Nowland Melvin (1860-1926) was the daughter of John Nowland (1815-1901) and Sarah Ann Coleman Nowland (1828-1907), farmers in Kennedyville, Maryland. Mary became a school teacher until her marriage to Milton Melvin, who was the School Superintendent.
