Scope and Content Note
This collection contains a letter from John Emory dated December 31, 1823, thanking the Board of Visitors & Governors of Washington College for conferring on him the honorary degree of Gradus Doctoralis in Sacrosancta Theologia. Also included is a transcript of the letter.

Biographical Information Note
John Emory (1789-1835) was born in Spaniard’s Neck in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland. His early education was with a Schoolmaster in Easton, MD. Whom he followed to Pennsylvania. Emory attended Washington College, graduating in 1804. Following his father’s wishes he read law with fellow Washington College Alum the Hon. Richard Tilghman Earle in Centerville and passed the bar in 1808. In 1806 Emory had converted to Methodism and entered the Philadelphia Conference “on trial” in 1810. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1812, then as an elder in 1814. He went on to become Bishop and a prominant member of the Methodist Church. John Emory died in a runaway carriage accident near Reisterstown, MD, December 15, 1835. A year later Emory College, now Emory University, in Georgia was chartered in his name.
