Scope and Contents Note

This collection contains materials collected by Jean and Stephen Goode related to concrete and visual poetry of the 1960s and 70s. These include catalogs and promotional materials from publishers including Black Sparrow Press, Unicorn Press, and Something Else Press. There are also poetry postcards and prints mainly from poet Ian Hamilton Finlay.

Biographical Information

Jean Advena Goode (1927-2020) was born November 12th in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Albert Advena and Stella Young Advena. She graduated with a BA in education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1949 but worked as a musician until 1970. In 1952 Jean married author and editor Stephen H. Goode. They had one child, Elizabeth Waters. Jean became Vice President of the Whitson Publishing Company of Troy, New York in 1969 and by 1978 she was their chairman and president. Jean passed away in 2020.
