John F. Melvin account books
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains two account books kept by John F. Melvin regarding his business transactions including timber and agriculture. After John’s death in 1876 the accounts were continued by his family. There are many items inserted into the books including receipts, indentures, and a notice of John’s death.

Biographical Information Note
John Fletcher Melvin (1814-1876) was born June 3 in Caroline County, Maryland to Thomas and Sarah Melvin. He worked as a farmer and sawyer in Chestertown on the Eastern Shore. He married Hester Ann Tharp and together they had William Smithers, James Tharp, Estalina, Mary Ella, and May. He died March 26, 1876.
