Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a letter from Samuel T. Rogers of Bridgeport Connecticut to L. Wethered Barroll dated February 18, 1910. Barroll befriended Rogers while studying at Yale. Barroll was a Chestertown native and Rogers served as professor and Vice President of Washington College. The letter talks of Rogers health and goes on to discuss the issues of tariffs as they relate to politics of the time, this is shortly after the Payne-Aldrich Tariff Act of 1909. A transcript of the letter is included.

Biographical Information Note

Samuel Towner Rogers (1820-1913) was born in New Fairfield, Connecticut to Col. Amzi Rogers (1793-1880) and Betsy Barnum Rogers (1794-1880). He followed in his grandfather’s example and graduated from Yale University in 1844. He then began his career of teaching at Goshen in Milford, CT. In 1847 he became a professor of Mathematics and Natural History at Washington College, Chestertown, MD. Rogers became Vice-President under Richard W. Ringgold until 1852 when he became principal of nearby Easton Academy until 1856. Samuel traveled the Mid-West for a time until returning to CT. On September 8, 1859 he married Cornelia Hepzibah in Waterbury, CT. He spent time farming and formed a silver platting company, Rogers & Britton Silver Co. Samuel passed away in Bridgeport on February 17, 1913.
