Scope and Contents Note

This collection contains two editions of The Echo, a student-created publication, dated about 1887 and February 28, 1902. Some editors of The Echo were: Clara Usilton; Palmer Carroll; Effie Crouch; J. Wilbur Hirons; William Wheatly; Charles Wheatly; and Walter Lusby Nicholson. There is also mention of Wheatly’s sister Josephine also contributing to the publication. The first part is a biography of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the second contains copies of various news items from the time. These publications were probably made while they were all students at Chestertown High School in the eighth grade. Walter Lusby Nicholson, Charles, and Josephine Wheatly graduated from Washington College. William Wheatly attended Washington College for two years and J. Wilbur Hirons graduated from Wilmington Business School and Georgetown Law School.

Biographical Information Note

M. Palmer Carroll (1874-1952) came from a well-to-do family on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. She lived in Chestertown, MD but spent time in Washington, D.C. in the early 1900s she worked as an assistant bookkeeper at the Second National Bank in Chestertown.

J. Wilbur Hirons (1886-1951) was born September 12th in Chestertown, Maryland. After attending the local public school, he graduated from Wilmington Business School, later Beacom College, and then Georgetown Law School. He served as President of Beacom College and then Vice President of the Beacom Business School when it became Goldey-Beacom College. The school’s library and a scholarship are named in his honor. Wilbur also served on the Interstate Commerce Commission and as an executive secretary for DuPont. He married Ann Hirons and they had daughter, Marie and son, William B. The family retired to Sarasota, Florida. Wilbur passed away October 24, 1992.

Walter Lusby Nicholson (1886-1907) was born January 24th to Robert Nicolson of Kent County, Maryland. He graduated from Washington College in 1907. There is no information on the cause of death only that he died September 12, 1907 in Chestertown, MD.

Charles Frazier Wheatley (1887-1956) was born September 15th in Chestertown, Maryland to William Arthur Wheatley and Josephine R. Wheatley. He graduated from Washington College in 1907. In 1915 he married Avis Nowell Dodd (1890-1970) and had four children: Mary Joe Wheatley; Charles Frazier Wheatley, Jr., Sarah Elisabeth Wheatley; and William Howard Wheatley. Charles worked as a cashier and clerk in banks. He died September 6, 1956 in Chestertown, MD.

William Arthur Wheatley, Jr. (1886-1968) was born February 7th in Kent County, Maryland to William Arthur Wheatley and Josephine R. Wheatley. He attended Washington College for two years but did not graduate. He began working as an agent for the railroad station at Federalsburg, MD in 1914 until his retirement in 1946. In 1922 he married Mary Amanda “Mollie” Martino. William passed away February 28, 1968.
