Organizational History Note

The Episcopal Diocese of Easton serves the nine counties of Maryland's Eastern Shore: Caroline, Cecil, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, and Worcester. This diocese was established on November 19, 1868, following a split from the Diocese of Maryland. There are thirty-nine parishes and missions in the diocese, one of which is the Christ Episcopal Church of Kent Island, the oldest Christian congregation in Maryland. The first Bishop of the Diocese was Henry Champlin Lay, who served from 1869-1885.
