Scope and Contents Note

This collection contains a transcript of a letter written by Robert C. Thackery to the editor of The Cecil Whig. It was published in the June 14, 1870 paper. The letter was written in Chestertown, while Thackery was a student at Washington College. In this letter, Thackery laments the fact that people on the Eastern Shore are not sending their children to Washington College, and implores them to do so.

Biographical Information

Robert Creswell Thackery (1853-1932) was born August 17 in Elkton, Maryland to Thomas W. (1812-1872) and Sarah Matthews Thackery (1818-1892). He attended Elkton Academy before entering Washington College at the age of 13. After his graduation from Washington College in 1870, Thackery enrolled at Princeton University as a junior. He graduated from Princeton in 1872 at the age of 19 and was the youngest member of his graduating class. Thackery worked at the law office of Reuben Haines in Elkton and was admitted to the Cecil Bar in 1874. He had an interest in politics and unsuccessfully ran for the office of State's Attorney in 1879 and 1891. Thackery worked for 40 years as an Auditor of the Circuit Court and served as the President of the Cecil County Bar Association. In 1884, he married Elizabeth Stevenson (1864-1933); the couple had no children. Thackery died of pneumonia at his home on East Main Street in Elkton on February 1, 1932. He is buried in the Elkton Cemetery.
