Biographical Information
Ernest A. Howard (1885-1973) of Elkton, Maryland. Howard was a graduate of Washington College, class of 1905. During his time at college, he was editor of The Collegian, and after graduation, in the late 1920s, he sponsored a History Contest through it. After graduation Howard served as vice-principal of Elkton High School and then Principal of Shrewsbury Academy. In 1911 he attended business school and began a career with du Pont, starting as a stenographer. By 1920 he was asst. secretary to E. I. du Pont de Nemours. He continued in that position until 1950. Ernest was continually involved with Washington College serving on the Board of Visitors & Governors from 1936-1982 and as a trustee. He endowed a professorship in English Literature in 1964. The college honored him with an honorary degree in Humanities in 1970. Upon his death in 1973 he left a bequest to the college. His love of history extended beyond Washington College to his home Cecil County. In 1955 he helped establish the Cecil County Library by donating a wing for a reading room and historical section.
