Scope and Contents Note

This collection contains several varsity certificates, two for football, two for basketball, and one for baseball. There are also two felt varsity letters, both badly moth-eaten. There are also several scrapbook pages of McGran’s athletic career.

Biographical Information

Clayton John McGran (1899-1988) was born on December 14th in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to John C. McGran and Jane McGran. He attended Washington College until his junior year. While at the college, he left his mark as a star athlete, even a decade later, The Elm places him on their all-star team along with Fred “Dutch” Dumschott. He would have graduated with the class of 1926, but that year he became a father to Clayton E. McGran, Jr. (1924-1999). His son would become part of the class of 1948. McGran returned to CT and had two more children with his wife Gladys Smith McGran (1904-1991). He passed away in 1988.
