Scope and Contents Note

This collection contains correspondence from brothers Lawrence and W. Carlton Gorsuch. Lawrence’s materials deal mostly with his time at Washington College, while Carlton’s are mostly from his time with the Justice Department. There are also receipts, teaching certificates, and a program for a Bonfire at Washington College.

Biographical Information

Lawerence Merrill Gorsuch (1897-1978) was born August 31st in Oxford, Maryland to Watson Addiston Gorsuch (1876-1952) and Lillian M. Hilmann Gorsuch (1879-1962). Lawrence attended Washington College and graduated in 1920. He went on to a career in teaching and became Principal of the Perryville High School. He married Julia Mitchell. Lawrence passed away on May 2, 1978. Walter Carlton Gorsuch (1900-1958) was born on May 18th. In 1919 he was granted a provisional teaching certificate for the second grade, but unlike his brother Lawrence, Carlton became a lawyer. He moved to New York and married Amanda Huntley on June 29, 1932. He began to work as an investigator for the Department of Justice. He passed away on May 11, 1958.
