Biographical Information

William David Rowley Straughn (1899-1976) was born in Snow Hill, Maryland, to Dr. William D. Straughn and Tenie C. Straughn. He graduated from Washington College in 1921. He received his master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Maryland in 1928. He did three years at Columbia University. While at Washington College, he participated in the Student Army Training Corps towards the end of World War I. In the 1920s, he applied to the United States Civil Service Commission and the Reserves, offering his skills as a chemist. In 1929, he worked in the textile fibers department of DuPont Co., retiring in 1964. He married Henrietta Crane (1906-1997), and they had two daughters. Straughn passed away in 1976.
