This collection contains a diary kept by James Roy Micou for the year 1885. During this time Micou lived in Petersburg, Virginia and married Catherine Roberta Morrison. The diary was commercially produced, The Emerson Birthday Book: Illustrated.

Biographical Information Note
James Roy Micou (1859-1939) was born in Tappahannock, Virginia to James Roy Micou, Jr. (1807-1892) and Ellen Harvie Jones Micou (1819-1902). On January 29, 1885 he married Catharine Roberta Morrison in Petersburg, VA where he was working as a teacher after his graduation from the University of Virginia. In 1887 he joined the faculty of Washington College which at the time had only two other faculty. He taught Latin, Greek, French, German, later adding Chemistry and Physics. Micou spent forty years at the College and eventually served as its Vice-President. He died in 1939.
