Biographical Information Note

William Holland Wilmer (1782-1827) was born October 29 in Kent County, Maryland, to Simon Wilmer, IV (1749-1798). Simon was one of the early subscribers to Washington College and his son, William, graduated in 1802. Ordained in 1808 he was rector of Chester Parish then of St. Paul’s in Alexandria, VA, from 1812-1822. He also helped create the Virginia Protestant Episcopal Seminary and in 1823 was a professor of Theology. Wilmer served as the eleventh President of William and Mary College until his retirement. William married Marion Hannah Cox (1796-1821) and in 1823 as a widower he married Anne Brice Fitzhugh (1801-1854). He had three children, Richard Hooker, Marian Rebecca Wilmer Brown, and George Thornton. Wilmer died August 24, 1827 in Williamsburg, VA.
