Charles Gould served as President of Washington College from 1919-1923. His papers deal with athletics, female students, planting trees on campus, and the creation of an endowment campaign with Col. Clarence M. Hodson.

Biographical Information

Clarence Pembroke Gould (1884-1971) was born November 1st in Church Hill, Maryland to William Dunbar and Josephene Trenchard Faithfull. He received his bachelors in 1903 and his master’s of philosophy in 1911 both from Johns Hopkins University. From 1911 to 1918 he taught History at Wooster College in Ohio, then joined the Navy. It was his service in the Navy that kept him from taking the post of President of Washington College. After the war and his discharge from military service, he was able to take the position in 1919. While President the college adopted the “Group System” and began an endowment campaign. Gould had originally planned to serve for five years but by 1923 felt that he had achieved many of his goals and resigned from the position. He went back to teaching in Ohio first at Western Reserve University until 1933, then at Kenyon College, and finally at Youngstown University. Gould married Gertrude Ruth Schill of Denver and together they had a daughter. Clarence died December 16, 1971, and was buried in Church Hill.
