Biographical Information Note
John Samuel William Jones (1866-1944) was born November 19 in Somerset County, Maryland to Benjamin and Arianna Olivia Scott Jones. He was educated there and then entered Washington College as a sophomore, graduating in 1889. Jones joined the college as part of the Math department in 1892. After Cain’s resignation, the college had yet to find a replacement and as the Fall semester was rapidly approaching, the Board looked to the faculty for a replacement. Jones refused but stood in as acting President until the appointment of Clarence Gould in March of 1919 when he returned to his duties as Dean. During his acting presidency, he oversaw the Student Army Training Corps. Dr. Jones married Mary L. Matthews (1872-1923) in 1896, Washington College’s first female graduate and class of 1895, together they had three daughters. After Mary’s death, he married Ethel S. Collough Fox (1889-1960) in 1935. Jones passed away on September 4, 1944, he is buried in Chestertown.
