This collection contains the papers of Washington College Acting President Garry E. Clarke, who served from 1981-1982. Papers include administrative and faculty records, college Bicentennial materials, and search committee notes.

Biographical Information
Garry Evans Clarke (1943-2016) was born on March 19th in Moline, Illinois, to Charles H. Clarke ( -1970) and Gladys A. Hokinson Clarke (1918-2003). He received his bachelor’s in music from Cornell College in 1965. He went on to receive a master’s from Yale three years later. He began his teaching career at Washington College in the Fall of 1968. Clarke spent his whole career at Washington College, teaching music, chairing the department, serving as Dean from 1977-1983, and as Acting President from 1981 to 1982. He received an honorary Doctor of Letters in 1988, the only time a faculty member has been honored. Clarke retired in 2012. Clarke, a talented pianist, left another legacy at the college: the donation of his music library to the Gibson Center of the Arts in 2009. Garry married Melissa Naul on May 24, 1975; together they had two daughters. Clarke passed away on July 3, 2016.
