William Price Civil War diary
Scope and Contents Note
This collection contains the diary William Price kept during the Civil War. Along with handwritten entries, there are newspaper articles pasted in. Some are wartime reports others are published accounts of Price’s remarks. Price’s son Benjamin was enlisted with Company A of the 13th Maryland Regiment. He enlisted when he lived in Chestertown.

Biographical Information
William Price (circa 1794-1868) was born in Hagerstown, Maryland to Jean Jane Scott Price (1768-1802) and Josiah Price (1757-1825). He graduated from Dickinson College and went on to read law under Judge Mason of Washington County, Maryland, where he passed the bar. Price served in the Maryland General Assembly as a Senator in 1824 then with the House of Delegates, Baltimore City, from 1861-1862. He served as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland from 1862-1865 and 1866-1867. Price was also the President of the Union Party Baltimore City Convention of 1864. In May of 1842, he married Marion Wallace Bruce (1816-1878) and had three children; Benjamin Price (1843- ), Bruce Price (1845-1903), and Adrian Price (1847- ). William passed away on November 28, 1868.
