James W. Cain served as President of Washington College from 1903-1918, however, a fire destroyed William Smith Hall, where the library and records of the college were stored, and much of Cain’s early papers were lost. The bulk of the records in the collection are from after the fire and deal with its repercussions including rebuilding and fundraising. Paul Titsworth served as President of Washington College from 1923-1933. His papers deal with the endowment for Washington College, issues related to the campus and housing, curriculum, grading, and awarding of honorary degrees. There are also papers related to the Summer School for Ministers hosted at the College, the Washington Centennial, and Washington College’s sesquicentennial.
