Letters regard the posting of a position for Principal to a school and a letter of recommendation from Dr. Jones, who was a professor of Chemistry at the Agricultural lab at the College of Maryland.

Included in his correspondence are two letters that discuss the beginning of the Civil War and mention soldiers in Chestertown, the other is on stationary with an image of Uncle Sam kicking Jeff Davis. Many of the letters discuss mutual friends and news. As the Civil War continues the letters discuss the war including soldiers in Chestertown. One letter is on Pro-Union stationary with “The Flag of a New Confederacy.” Showing Uncle Sam kicking Jeff Davis, though both Joseph and Francis seem to have supported the Confederacy.
